# Picture in picture

> How to put your own photo or video in a window over the video: shape, size, corners, rotation, border, sound and window motion with keyframes.

**Picture in picture** puts your photo or video in a small window over the video. The main shot stays on screen, and next to it viewers see what you're talking about: a product close-up, a phone screen, a reaction, a second angle. The window can be a circle or a rectangle with rounded corners, with a border, rotated, semi-transparent — and it can move around the frame.

It's free and works without AI — on the web and in the app for iPhone, iPad and Mac.

**Demo (Web):**

1. Click “+” on the right of the strip, choose “Picture in picture”, then a photo
2. The photo appears as a window in the top right, a new insert is on the inserts track, the “Window” panel is open
3. Drag the window with the mouse to the bottom left of the preview
4. Pull the corner handle — the window gets bigger
5. In the “Window” panel click “Circle” and move “Border” — a round window with a border
6. Click ✓ “Done” — the window is on the preview, the insert is selected on the strip

## Add a window

### 1. Pick the spot

Put the playhead where the window should appear. A window is an insert: if speech plays at that moment it sticks to the words, otherwise to the fragment's time, and it moves with the fragment when you reorder or trim it.

### 2. Open “+” → “Picture in picture”

Click “+” on the right of the strip and choose **Picture in picture**. On the web a file picker opens, in the app — your photo library. Once uploaded, the file appears as a window for 3 seconds from the playhead: in the top right of the frame, 42% of its width, with slightly rounded corners.

### 3. Or turn an existing insert into a window

Already have a [full-frame insert](https://docs.slicer.media/en/guide/editor/media/)? Select it on the inserts track and choose **As window**. To make it full-frame again, use **Full frame** in the same toolbar.

A video can have up to 10 windows. If there are already 10, you'll see **Up to 10 windows per video**: make one of them full-frame again or delete it.

## Edit right on the preview

Select the window on the inserts track — a frame with handles appears around it on the preview.

**Web**

- **Move** — drag the window with the mouse.
- **Size** — the corner handle, or the mouse wheel over the window.
- **Rotate** — the circle above the window.

The hint under the panel: **Drag the window on the preview: the corner handle resizes, the circle on top rotates, the wheel resizes.**

**iPhone and iPad**

- **Move** — drag the window with your finger.
- **Size** — pinch with two fingers, or the corner handle.
- **Rotate** — the circle above the window.

On iPad and Mac a trackpad pinch resizes too.

You can push the window partly past the edge of the frame so it “peeks in” from the side.

## The “Window” panel

With a window selected, click **Window** — the **Picture in picture** panel opens:

| Setting | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Rectangle** / **Circle** | the window's shape |
| **Size** | the window's width as a share of the frame width — 10 to 100% |
| **Corners** | corner radius of a rectangular window |
| **Rotation** | −180° to 180° |
| **Opacity** | at 100% the window is solid; lower — the video shows through |
| **Border** | border thickness (**none** — no border); with a border, six colors appear below: white, black, turquoise, blue, yellow and red |
| **Sound** | volume of the video in the window; 0 by default — only the main video is heard. Video only |

Shape, corners, border and sound apply to the whole window. Position, size, rotation and opacity can be animated.

## Window motion

The window can travel across the frame, grow and rotate — with keyframes, just like [fragment keyframes](https://docs.slicer.media/en/guide/editor/keyframes/).

### 1. The first keyframe

Put the playhead where the motion starts and click **Keyframe** in the **Window** panel.

### 2. More keyframes

Move the playhead on, then drag the window on the preview, or change its size, rotation or opacity — a new keyframe appears at that moment. The panel shows how many there are: **2 keyframes — the window moves between them**.

### 3. Edit and remove

When the playhead is on a keyframe, editing on the preview changes that keyframe, and the button becomes **Remove keyframe**.

Between keyframes the window moves smoothly. Keyframe times count from the start of the insert: if the insert moves along with its words, the motion moves with it.

## Good to know

- The video in a window plays from the start of the file. With sound above 0, the window's audio is mixed with the main video's sound.
- Like any insert, a window moves with its words when you trim or reorder fragments, and you can drag it onto other words along the inserts track.
- The preview shows the window right away; the final video gets it after **Export**.
- Both the [AI assistant](https://docs.slicer.media/en/guide/ai/assistant/) and the [director in the chat](https://docs.slicer.media/en/guide/ai/chat/) can turn an insert into a window — for example, “Show the insert with the product photo as a round window in the bottom right”.
