Chat with the director: questions, edits, re-cuts

How to talk to the Slicer AI director: edits to the cut, music and style in words or by voice, earlier versions, attachments, reply model and price.

On this page

The Chat is a conversation with your project's AI director. It shows how the director edited the reel: what it found in the footage, how it thought, why it built the reel this way and what it fixed when it checked the finished result itself. It is also where you write or say what to change: "make it more dynamic", "start with the result", "put this clip at the start". The director answers, edits the current cut with the same tools the editor has, changes the reel style, suggests a re-cut or brings back an earlier version.

The Chat is available on the web and in the app for iPhone, iPad and Mac, and looks the same everywhere.

Step 1 of 5

Step 1 of 5
  1. Open a project on the Editor section and tap the chat button in the project header
  2. The Chat opens in place of the editor: “What shall we do with the reel?” and four suggestions
  3. Tap the “Make the reel more dynamic” suggestion — the feed shows “Thinking about the answer…”
  4. The director's answer: what it changed, the “Edits: … — already in the editor” note and the price of the reply
  5. Tap the editor button in the header — the edits are already on the timeline

Where to open it

  • Phone and narrow window. In the Editor section, tap the chat button in the project header (the sparkles icon) — the Chat opens in place of the editor. To get back to the timeline, tap the same button, which now shows a timeline icon.
  • Wide screen — a computer, an iPad in landscape, a window on a Mac. The Chat is a panel to the right of the preview and the timeline. Hide it with Hide chat (✕ in the chat header), open it again with Chat with the director in the project header. Slicer remembers whether the panel is open.

While a montage is running, the chat panel on a wide screen shows its progress: the current stage and percentage.

Step 1 of 5
  1. Click “Chat with the director” in the project header — the chat panel opens on the right
  2. Click the model button under the input field — the list of reply models opens
  3. Click “+” under the field and choose “Photo or video” — a file chip with upload progress appears above the field
  4. The file is uploaded, and the new source shows up in the Media panel
  5. Type “Put this clip at the start of the reel” — the message is ready to send

What the director can do in the Chat

You write What the director does
A question: "Why does the reel start with this phrase?"Answers from its material map and from how it built and checked the reel
An edit: "Cut pauses and repeats", "Trim the reel to 30 seconds", "Highlight the key words in captions"Edits the current cut with the editor's functions. Under the answer — the note Edits: 3 — already in the editor, you can undo them
Cutting: "Split the second clip at the phrase about the result and add a 2-second freeze frame at the end"Splits, trims, reorders and duplicates fragments, adds a freeze frame, replaces a fragment's picture with another source
Music and voice: "Use the track from the sources, make it quieter, duck it under speech and fit it to the reel length"Sets music from the sources or project media, changes volume and ducking, fits the track to the length and the cuts to the beats; puts a voice recording on the voice track
Your photo or video: "Show the photo of the finished cake over the phrase about the result, as a window in the corner"Puts a photo or video over the reel — full frame or as a window
Style: "Make the captions bigger and move them higher"Changes the reel style without a re-cut — more
A different approach: "Start with the result and make it more dynamic"Suggests a re-cut with new wishes — it starts only when you press the button
An earlier version: "Bring back the reel from before the rebuild"Makes a version from the project history current, as long as its file is still kept, and replies Made this version current

Edits

The director edits the cut that is open in the editor right now — including your latest changes. It controls almost the whole editor, with the same tools as you and the AI assistant:

  • Speech and cutting — cut and restore words, remove filler words and pauses (like Cut pauses in the editor), split, trim, reorder, duplicate and delete fragments, add a freeze frame, replace a fragment's picture with another source, put a new source into the reel.
  • Fragment look — speed, volume, transitions, effects, colour, animations, framing and background, camera motion from a preset (zoom in, zoom out, pan), free processing: reverse, stabilization, noise reduction and audio enhancement.
  • Music — set a track from the sources or project media, music volume and fragment volume, ducking under speech, the track start, fade-in and fade-out, fit the track to the reel length, snap footage cuts to the beats; remove the music.
  • Voice track — add a voice recording or audio from the sources, move, trim, change its volume, remove it.
  • Your photos and videos over the reel — full frame or as a window (picture in picture): add, adjust, remove.
  • Captions and elements — fix a word or rewrite the text of a whole phrase in the captions, accents; add and adjust the hook, callouts, cards (caption, your own photo), titles, emoji, zooms, sounds and markers, move them to another moment and around the frame; change the frame format and the cover.

An edit shows up in the editor right away. Everything the director changed in one reply is a single undo step: don't like it — press Undo in the editor (⌘ZCtrlZ), and the reel and its style go back to how they were before the reply. If the director can't tell what to change, it asks you to clarify.

Reel style

The director changes the style without a re-cut — like the style panel in the editor: template, font, colour, look, size and position of the captions, the word highlight, phrase entrance, words on screen and letter case, speaker colours, sound accents and the intro zoom. For example: "Make the captions bigger and move them higher", "Make the spoken word pop", "Pick another font and turn on sound accents". The new style shows up in the preview right away; the cut stays the same.

What is still done in the editor

The director doesn't start paid AI operations or export by itself: each has its own price, and the choice is yours. Ask in words — “translate the captions into Spanish”, “remove the background in the second fragment”, “export the reel” — and a card with Open in the editor appears under the reply. It opens the right tool (for a fragment, it selects it first), and you see the price before the start and confirm it, just like when you start it yourself.

The director can rename the project right away: “call the project Morning routine” — and the new name appears under the reply.

Re-cut

When a request means building the reel again — a different video type, pace, effects or length — the director doesn't start a montage by itself. It sends a Re-cut with new wishes card: what it will change, the new settings and the price — 24 tokens for a new edit. The montage starts only when you press Re-cut; after that the card shows Re-cut started.

A re-cut from the Chat works just like a rebuild from Settings: the director builds the reel again and checks it itself, and your editor changes are reset.

Earlier versions

A montage delivers one version, checked by the director, and every rebuild, retry, style change and export adds a new one. Ask in words — "bring back the previous version", "bring back the reel from before the rebuild" — and the director makes that version current and replies Made this version current. This works for any version in the project history whose file is still kept (the last 10 versions).

  • The reel on the timeline is replaced with the chosen version: the editor shows its cut, continue editing from there.
  • The reel that was current isn't lost: it stays in Media → History, and you can bring it back with Make current (History and versions) or with the same request in the Chat.
  • Bringing back a version is free: you only pay for the director's reply, like any reply in the Chat.

Messaging the director

  1. Write a request or pick a suggestion

Type your request in the field at the bottom of the Chat and send it. An empty Chat shows What shall we do with the reel? with the suggestions Make the reel more dynamic, Cut pauses and repeats, Trim the reel to 30 seconds and Highlight the key words in captions — a suggestion is sent as soon as you tap it.

  2. Wait for the answer

While the director is thinking, the feed shows Thinking about the answer…. The answer arrives in one piece. Under it you see the name of the model that answered and the price of the reply; you can copy the answer text. You can close the Chat while the director is thinking: the edits still reach the editor.

  3. Keep the conversation going

The director remembers the latest messages and how it edited the reel, so you can follow up: "now make it a bit shorter", "bring back the previous hook".

Voice messages

You can say your request instead of typing it — a voice message up to 5 minutes long. The director transcribes it, and the text appears in the message next to the recording player.

Web
iPhone and iPad

Click the microphone button in the input field and allow the browser to use the microphone. While recording, the field shows the recording waveform instead of text. Stop the recording and send it. After 5 minutes the recording stops by itself.

File attachments

Press Attach a file ("+" under the field) and choose Photo or video or Audio. You can attach up to 10 files to one message. Each file uploads right away and becomes a project source: a chip with the file name and upload progress appears above the field, and the new material shows up in the Media section. Formats and sizes are the same as for other materials (File formats and limits).

When the upload is done, send a message — for example, "Put this clip at the start of the reel" or "Add this photo after the first phrase". The director sees attachments as new sources and can put a file into the reel as a new fragment — whole or just the part you need. The file stays among the project sources even if you remove it from the message before sending.

Reply model

Under the input field there is a button with the name of the model that answers in the Chat (tooltip Reply model). Press it and choose another model from the list — it shows the models currently available in Slicer. Your choice is remembered for the next messages.

The model only answers in the Chat: the montage and re-cuts are done by the Slicer director as usual. If the chosen model doesn't respond, the director's default model answers. Models differ in how they answer and in price — the price of a reply depends on the chosen model.

What it costs

A reply costs exactly what the AI calls behind it cost — transcribing a voice message, the reasoning and the answer itself — with no markup. The price depends on the length of the conversation, the size of the reel and the model, so it isn't known in advance: Slicer shows it after the reply.

  • You can message the director when you have at least one token on your balance.
  • Under every reply you see its price: This answer cost … tokens or This answer cost less than a token.
  • Under the input field you see how many model tokens the whole Chat used and what it cost (tooltip Model tokens in this chat and their cost). Model tokens are the units of text the AI counts; they aren't the Slicer tokens on your balance.
  • Whole Slicer tokens are taken from your balance: the fractional remainder accumulates with the project and is charged once it adds up to a whole token.
  • A re-cut from the Chat costs the same as a regular montage — 24 tokens, and starts only when you press the button.

Every charge is listed in the operation history of your balance.

The director's journal

During every montage and re-cut, the chat feed gets entries about what the director did. Details are collapsed — expand them with More.

Entry What it contains
Recognized speech: … wordshow many words were recognized and how many retake groups of the same thought were found — the director uses the best take of each
Watched the footage: … sceneshow many scenes the material has and how long the author talks to camera, shows an action, and how much b-roll there is
Material mapwhat the material is about, For whom and the approach to the reel; in the details — Story beats, Possible openings, What gets in the way
Director’s reasoninghow the director thought: on the material, on the edit and, during the self-check, on the finished cut. Not every model provides it
Version cardIdea, the story step by step and How it is cut — piece by piece: why each fragment and tool is there (for example, "slow motion" or "transition: fade"), colour, title, camera moves, callouts. If the director changed the plan during the self-check, a second such card follows — with the corrected plan
Watched the finished cutwhat the director saw in the frames of the finished reel and what is worth fixing — it takes this into account during the self-check
The reel is readythe cover and duration of the finished reel; the current version is marked Chosen
The director’s briefnot shown by default: the brief holds the rules of the Slicer AI director, and they stay on the server. If the entry is there, it has everything the director received before the montage: rules and settings, material and wishes — in English, as the model reads it, with a Copy button. Later steps come as separate Added to the brief entries, for example for checking the finished cut
Lessons for next timeafter an export or a re-cut: what the director will take into account in future reels. Lessons are general — no quotes, names or details of your reel

Your messages, the director's answers and changes of the current version go into the same feed, so the whole project history is in one place.

Tips

  • Be specific: what to change and where — "remove the second phrase", "start with the shot where the result is visible".
  • One request — one task. That makes it easier to check an edit and undo it if needed.
  • For a quick edit without a conversation, use the AI assistant; for a new approach to the reel, use a rebuild.
