Markers on the timeline
Markers in the Slicer editor — note flags on the ruler: a note and a color, jumping with M, Shift+M and Alt+M, clip and element edges snapping to markers.
On this page
A marker is a flag on the timeline ruler, a note to yourself: “title goes here”, “check the sound”, “second topic starts”. Markers never get into the finished video. They help you find your way around a long reel, jump between key spots and place edges precisely: clip and element edges snap to markers.
A marker sits on a frame of a clip, not on a second of the reel. Reorder, trim or speed up the clip — the marker moves along with its frame.

Step 1 of 5
- Put the playhead at the start of the second phrase and press “Marker” — a turquoise flag appears on the ruler
- Seek closer to the end of the reel and press M — a second flag
- Click the first flag — the “Marker” sheet with the time, a note field and colors
- Type “Title goes here”, pick “Yellow” and press “Done” — the flag turns yellow
- Press Alt + M — the playhead jumps back to the first marker
Add a marker
Find the spot
Put the playhead on the frame you need: scroll the strip or click the ruler.
Press “Marker”
Clear the selection (“‹” or Esc) and press Marker in the main tool set. On the web and on iPad or Mac with a keyboard, the M key does the same — even with something selected.
Find the flag
A flag appears at the bottom of the ruler, above the tracks. A new marker is turquoise and has no note.
If there is already a marker at the playhead, a second one won't be added next to it: Marker or M opens that marker's sheet instead. A reel can have up to 100 markers — after that the editor shows There are already 100 markers — no more can be added.

Step 1 of 3
- Tap “Marker” in the main tool set — a flag appears on the ruler
- Tap the flag — the “Marker” sheet opens
- Pick “Red” and tap “Done” — the flag turns red
Note and color
Click the flag on the ruler on the web, or tap it on iPhone and iPad. The preview pauses and the Marker sheet opens:
- the marker's time and a reminder: “At 00:05 — moves with its clip. Not shown in the video.”;
- a note field — up to 40 characters, for example “check the sound”;
- a color: Turquoise, Yellow, Red, Green or Violet — the flag changes color right away;
- Done saves the note. It is also saved by Enter in the field or when you simply close the sheet;
- Delete marker removes the marker. Changed your mind — ⌘ZCtrlZ.
You can't drag a flag along the ruler. To move a marker, delete it and add a new one where you need it.
Jump between markers
- ⇧MShiftM — to the next marker;
- ⌥MAltM — to the previous one.
The preview pauses on the marker's frame. Marker keys work in the Timeline mode and with any keyboard layout. The marker sheet shows a reminder of them at the bottom.
Scroll the strip to the flag you need. On iPad and Mac with a hardware keyboard the same keys as on the web work: M adds a marker, ⇧MShiftM and ⌥MAltM jump to the next and previous one.
Markers move with their clip
- Reorder. Move a clip — its markers move with it.
- Trim and speed. The marker stays on the same frame of the clip; that frame just ends up elsewhere in the reel.
- The marked frame is trimmed off or the clip is deleted — the marker disappears from the ruler. Undo brings it back.
- Slip. The clip's markers stay at the same places in the reel.
Snapping to markers
A marker works like a magnet — just like word boundaries and music beats:
- clip edges snap, while you drag a handle, to the markers inside that clip;
- element edges on the tracks — plaques, cards, titles, emoji, zooms, inserts, voice recordings — snap to any marker;
- moving an element: when its start or end comes close to a marker, the element lands right on it.
On iPhone and iPad a light haptic tap marks the snap. A handy trick: put a marker on the word or beat where a plaque should appear, then drag the plaque to the flag.
Good to know
- Markers are just for you: they're not in the preview or in the finished video.
- The AI assistant sees markers too, together with their notes. On request it adds, changes and deletes them, for example: “Put a marker at every topic change”.
- While the marker sheet is open, the other editor shortcuts don't fire.
